Learning for Life

"Since we cannot know what knowledge will be most needed in the future, it is senseless to try to teach it in advance. Instead, we should try to turn out people who love learning so much and learn so well that they will be able to learn whatever needs to be learned." John Holt

One of Shawley's key priorities is to equip our children with the knowledge, skills, and attributes they need to become successful learners and independent thinkers in the ever changing 21st Century. Our aim is to ensure that they leave us with the qualities they need to meet the challenges of the future. Children are encouraged to become confident lifelong learners through developing the skills of readiness, resourcefulness, resilience, reflection and remembering which we believe are the keys to their future success.

The 5Rs - These are the 5 aspects that make a good learner:

READINESS

Readiness means being ready to learn, motivated and curious.  It involves learners setting their own goals and managing their own learning process.

RESOURCEFULNESS

Resourcefulness means knowing what to do and where to go when you get stuck. The resourceful learner uses imagination, learns in different ways, asks good questions, takes risks and meets challenges.

RESILIENCE

Resilience means 'sticking at it' especially when things get difficult. Remaining optimistic, the resilient learner always tries their best, has a positive attitude, finds interest in what they are doing and practises.

REFLECTION

Reflection means learning from experience. The reflective learner asks 'why?' They stay calm, listen to different opinions and learn from mistakes.

RESPONSIBILITY

Responsibility means taking ownership of your learning and working effectively alongside other learners when appropriate. The responsible learner knows right and wrong, gets on with it, plans ahead and helps others.

We have recently started awarding children with VIP (Very Important Pupil) Lanyards when they have excelled at something. We are particularly looking for children who promote the school values and are excellent role models to others in terms of following the school rules.

Our most recent VIP awards have gone to:

What parents are saying about us

Shawley is a caring environment where every child is known to all, even from the early days of the Reception year. The older children are taught to respect the little ones; the little ones know and trust the older ones. Personal and emotional development, as well as academic progression, are intrinsic to the success of this warm, secure school which, although located in the heart of Epsom Downs, retains a "village-like" feel.

John & Glynis Wheeler, Parents

Shawley has given our son the best possible start in school life. All the teachers throughout the school seem to have a real passion and enthusiasm for teaching. The school has an enthusiastic and thriving Fundraising Committee, consistently striving to raise funds for extra equipment and facilities for the children.
