Partnerships with Parents & Carers

At Shawley Community Primary School, we value and appreciate the important role all parents/carers play in supporting their children and developing a positive attitude to school and learning.  At Shawley there are many opportunities for parents/carers to actively participate in supporting their children in school.  These include:

Parents’ evenings
Open evenings are held each term. In the early part of the autumn term parents/carers are invited to meet with their child’s teacher. This is an important meeting as it enables us to establish parents’/carers’ views on how their child is settling into the new class and discuss the targets for the coming year. In the spring and summer terms teachers and parents/carers review progress being made and discuss the child’s work. During the summer term, an Open Afternoon is held where parents/carers are invited to view the work of the children.

Update on progress
Regular information about children’s attainment is shared with parents/carers on a termly basis. An annual report is sent home at the end of the spring term for children in years 1 to 6 and includes details of your child’s progress together with their next targets.  Parents/Carers of children in the reception year receive their reports at the end of the summer term.

School functions
Parents/Carers are invited to school functions such as Harvest Assembly, Christmas celebrations, musical events, charity functions, Fundraisers events and sporting activities.

Parents’ Forum
These are held half termly for any parents/carers who wish to attend to meet with the Head teacher and Deputy Head teacher to discuss whole school strategies.

School newsletter
This is sent out to all parents at the end of each month either electronically via ParentMail or as a hard copy if parents prefer.  A copy is also placed on the website for reference.

Curriculum workshops
These are organised during the year linked to areas of focus from the School Development Plan.

Home learning
Suggestions of activities the children can undertake are sent out to all parents/carers on a regular basis throughout each term.

Open afternoons
In the summer and autumn terms we also hold several Open Afternoons where prospective parents can come and view the work of the school.

Any concerns
The Head teacher and the teaching staff are happy to talk to parents about their child at any time. If we are concerned at any time about your child’s progress we will contact you. In return, if you have any worries or difficulties, please discuss them with us. Teachers can usually be available after school and the Head teacher is able to talk to parents at almost any time when necessary.

We have a comprehensive induction programme for all the children who are due to start in the reception classes in September.

•    Reception induction evening for all parents/carers to introduce the staff and receive information about the forthcoming year.
•    Induction mornings for all children.  Children spend a session in their new classes with their new teachers.
•    Home visits by the reception team in September, just before the children start school.
•    At the end of the summer term, we hold a transition meeting for parents/carers as their children move into year 1.

We also work very closely with our local secondary schools to ensure a positive and effective transition for the children in year 6 as they move into year 7.

All parents automatically become a member of the Fundraisers when their children start school.  The Fundraisers organise many events over the course of each year.  All the monies raised help to buy equipment and other extras that the school may not otherwise be available to the school.

Our School has valued accreditations

What parents are saying about us

Shawley is a caring environment where every child is known to all, even from the early days of the Reception year. The older children are taught to respect the little ones; the little ones know and trust the older ones. Personal and emotional development, as well as academic progression, are intrinsic to the success of this warm, secure school which, although located in the heart of Epsom Downs, retains a "village-like" feel.

John & Glynis Wheeler, Parents

Shawley has given our son the best possible start in school life. All the teachers throughout the school seem to have a real passion and enthusiasm for teaching. The school has an enthusiastic and thriving Fundraising Committee, consistently striving to raise funds for extra equipment and facilities for the children.
